Gold filled jewelry is composed of a solid layer of karat gold (14K, 18K, 24K) bonded with heat & pressure to another metal, in this case sterling silver. This layer of gold is at least 1/20th by weight layer of karat gold. A gold filled item has an actual layer of gold giving it more value and making it tarnish free, this layer is thicker than that of gold plated items. Gold plate is a thin coating of elctroplated gold (a few microns) on top of base metal and is more prone to flaking and tarnish.
