Gold filled jewelry is composed of a solid layer of karat gold (14K, 18K, 24K) bonded with heat & pressure to another metal, in this case sterling silver. This layer of gold is at least 1/20th by weight layer of karat gold. A gold filled item has an actual layer of gold giving it more value and making it tarnish free, this layer is thicker than that of gold plated items.
